The recommended surface preparation method for trailer sidewalls is to lightly abrade the surfaces with a 3M™ Scotch-Brite™ 7447 hand pad. Just abrade the surface; don’t remove the paint or coating. Afterwards, clean with a 50/50 blend of isopropyl alcohol and water. Finally, apply 3M™ Adhesion Promoter 111 (3M AP111) to the surface and allow to dry before application of the 3M VHB Tape or bonding. If application temperatures are less than 60°F, 3M recommends using 3M™ Primer 94 instead of 3M AP111.
This surface preparation is the standard starting place for the high-demand application of exterior truck and trailer panel bonding. It works with most tested paints, metals, and coatings. Adhesion testing can be completed to determine the surface preparation that provides optimal results on your specific substrates. Contact 3M at 800-555-1212 to learn more.
