Safelite just installed a windshield and warned me that the cowl surround used does not fit well against the windshield and sometimes causes wind noise. Mine does. I asked while he was installing if I could use silicone caulk to stick the flexible (plastic-rubber?) to the windshield. He said he would use a 3M tape instead. I neglected to find out what kind of tape to get. I need to eliminate gaps between the windshield and the cowl surround caused by warpage. At some point it may need to be removed (another broken windshield). What would you recommend.
Thanks
Thanks for the question. While you could use a double sided tape or a liquid adhesive, a single sided tape may be more appropriate for removability. If the gap is relatively consistent, you could bond to the glass and the cowl would press against the backside of the tape. When the window breaks in the future, you can throw out the bonded tape with the glass and the cowl will be unaffected.
Matching the gap may be the biggest challenge, so here are a few options you could consider:
- 3M™ Double Coated Urethane Foam Tape 4016 (1/16″)
- 3M™ Double Coated Urethane Foam Tape 4008 (1/8″)
- 3M™ Double Coated Urethane Foam Tape 4004 (1/4″)
For added vibration damping, you could also consider:
- 3M™ Extreme Sealing Tape 4411G (0.040″)
- 3M™ Extreme Sealing Tape 4412G (0.080″)
