I am looking for a double sided tape (or liquid adhesive) that can bond or stick with FEP or PTFE films. We want to bond the FEP film (50 or 100 micron film thickness) to a tape or a material and then bond it to glass or acrylic.
Do you have or know any product that may be suitable for such application? It doesn’t need to bond perfectly but stick enough not to have water pernetration.
Thank you!
Thanks for the question. Fluorinated polymers like FEP and PTFE are challenging to bond, but we have a few options you could consider. There is also a difference between glass and acrylic as glass is highly hydrophilic and will undercut many adhesive bonds with enough exposure to water.
For the FEP/PTFE side, you can use either tape or adhesive. The top choices for tapes are silicone adhesives such as 9731 (silicone adhesive one side, acrylic adhesive the other side) or 96042 (silicone adhesive both sides). You could also try an acrylic adhesive such as 9472LE (transfer tape) or 93010LE (double coated tape with a carrier for handling). For liquid adhesives, you can test a cyanoacrylate such as PR100 with Primer AC77.
For the acrylic side, you can use any of the above except that you shouldn’t need the AC77 primer with PR100 on acrylic.
Glass is a bit more challenging due to it’s strong hydrophilic surface. For glass, we do not recommend PR100 as water is likely to undercut the bond. The tapes are better choices for glass. If using an acrylic tape, you can alternatively use a silane adhesion promoter (AP115) to increase stability in wet environments.
