Due to silicone’s extremely low surface energy, silicone substrates typically require a silicone adhesive. Silicone pressure sensitive adhesives are extremely durable, operate in a wide temperature range, are UV and chemical resistant. 3M offers the following tape constructions with silicone adhesive:
- 91022 – a 2 mil silicone Adhesive Transfer Tape (free film of silicone adhesive on a release liner).
- 96042 – a 5 mil double sided silicone tape with a PET carrier in-between the silicone adhesive for dimensional stability.
- 9731 – a double sided differential tape, with one side offering an aggressive acrylic adhesive and the other side offering a silicone adhesive.
There are also liquid adhesive options that provide good bonds to silicone. A cyanoacrylate such as 3M PR100 with a primer (AC79) on the silicone will provide very high bond strength although with the liquid you need to be careful to avoid excessive adhesive which will be messy if it squeezes out.
